Some moving tips to make moving easier:
Select a good moving service. Make sure the chosen mover has an established reputation for reliability, punctuality and careful handling of furniture. Do not try to save money by using a cheaper service as this may backfire.
Make a checklist:
Make sure you list out everything before, during and after the move so that you don’t leave anything out and make it organized.
Avoid moving anything you don’t require because it will be a waste of time, money and energy to pack and move non-required things. After all, if you haven’t been using it till now, it isn’t likely you’ll use it later.
Get rid of broken tools, old clothes and other things. You can give the useable things to charity or sell them off in a garage sale.
Ask some friends and family to help you pack and unpack. Pick out boxes in assorted sizes and make sure they are in good condition and clean. Liquor boxes are excellent for packing glasses, goblets and other breakable items.
Pack your items according to priority. Essential items must be packed together, whereas items which do not require immediate unpacking can be packed separately.
Make sure you have plenty of wrapping paper and heavy duty tape. Don’t use newspaper for packing as it may leave ink stains. Also use craft paper, tissue paper or bubble wrap paper for cushioning and lining items.
While packing, keep in mind that the contents of each room are packed in separate boxes. This will eliminate any confusion while unpacking. Mark each of the boxes with information regarding the contents and the designated room. In case of fragile items, mark the right side up. Label each of your packages with different colored stickers for different rooms like bedroom items, bathroom items etc.
Do not pack your cartons any more than 50 lbs as this makes handling them much easier.
Start packing early so you avoid any last minute rush!
Make a separate kit for your first day in the new home. This kit should include items that will be needed for the night in case it gets too late to unpack. Useful items would include non-perishable food, paper plates, some towels, toiletries, some sheets and blankets, a change of clothes for everyone.
If you have children, hire someone or get some relative or friend to babysit them so that they don’t interrupt in the busy schedule.
Before you unpack discuss a plan with your family and assign tasks to each one so that each person is responsible for something and keeps things running smoothly.
After you move, set up one room as soon as possible so that you have a room to relax and sleep in while the rest still needs to be set up.
Be sure you unpack the furniture first. After the functional set up, unpack accessories.
After moving, it may take a few days to get acquainted with your new neighborhood. So keep all that you will require for sure, handy. Also make sure you have a tool kit at hand.
